Oakland Horseshoe pitching in Oakland
began in the early 1950's when Oakland had a traveling team that played in
other cities in the area, such as Mattoon and Paris in Illinois, and Dana
and Cayuga in Indiana. Team members included Roy Kite, Phil Kits, Owen
Tennill, Ray Gilrreath, Glenn Cartwright and at
nine years old Illinois State President Floyd Tennill. The Oakland team
was competitive and did well in the traveling league. Oakland started with
just four courts in the 1980's added four more on the East side of the
city park where all of Oakland's tournaments were held until the fall of
1991. At that time the old courts were taken out and the new 22 court
complex was started.
With the help of enumerable people, concrete was poured, lights were
installed, fences were installed and in 1993 Oakland held the State
Tournament, a life long dream of people who got horseshoes started in
Oakland. State tournaments were also held at the Oakland courts in 2000
and 2005.
The Oakland Horseshoe Club officially started in its present location in
the spring of 1992, with approximately 10 members.
Members from Oakland, Arthur,
Charleston, Toledo. Greenup, Neoga, Tuscola, Paris and other
cities combined their efforts and help the Oakland club grow.
Oakland is known as the shadiest courts in the state, with giant oak trees
that cover 95% of the court area. Oakland holds a tournament every month
from June to September. Oakland encourages young players to get started in
horseshoes, and helps as many they can get started in playing horseshoes.
For more inf. Contact
Floyd Tennill,
2418 Village Road, Charleston, IL 61920 (217/348-5214).
